Kathy Ogle and Val Ulstad at their off-the-grid home in northern Minnesota
Why Cascade Bluff? We are partners in life as well as in work, and are lucky enough to spend at least half of our time at a magical place called Cascade Bluff. Perched partway up a ridge in the boreal forest of northern Minnesota, our property is intersected by a designated wild stream, Cascade River, and looks out over a spectacular view of forest, valleys and Lake Superior in the distance. On a clear day our view is over 100 miles to the opposite shore, the Apostle Islands and the upper peninsula of Michigan. Our home is entirely off the electrical grid (though well connected, through a signal-enhanced cell phone and wireless modem, to the communications grid) and we produce all our own electricity using solar power. A model of sustainable and energy efficient design, our home at Cascade Bluff is a physical manifestation of the concepts we love to learn about and teach: the renewing grace of being in nature, balancing priorities, acknowledging competing commitments, accounting for the long term, and honoring our deepest dreams and beliefs.
